Take the ‘standard’ phrase loop configuration in the Red Panda Tensor, from the post above.  Loopers and standard delays can be set up in a similar way, but the internal routings are subtly different.  One Looper-style advantage lies in the ways the recorded material can be manipulated.

A delay line feeds back into itself.  Loop manipulation can include FX that are inserted within that routing.  The FilterPong algorithm in the H9 / TimeFactor runs DELAY A in series with DELAY B.  In this preset, I split overall delay length between the two.  (I know, I know:  The math taken straight from the Tensor manual bothers me, too.  I’m guessing some kind of typo there, or 1-second processing diversion.)

  • Aux OFF – EXP PED HEEL  FEEDBACK  95
  • Aux OFF – EXP PED HEEL  MOD DEPTH  0
  • Aux OFF – EXP PED HEEL  FILTER  0
  • Aux ON  – EXP PED TOE    FEEDBACK  0
  • Aux ON  – EXP PED TOE    MOD DEPTH  5
  • Aux ON  – EXP PED TOE    FILTER  100

With delay line regeneration, there has to be some way to ‘shut it off’; erase or edit the looping contents.  Here, FEEDBACK is set to 95 (cuts down on static hiss buildups), then switched to 0.  The dual buffers will play out full length, then stop.  Switching in & out during that time will selectively slice into the recorded audio loop.

The FILTER effect is placed before the DELAY lines, so the filter effects are imprinted on the looping audio.  Those effects fade out with the final loop playback, or can be brought in & out of the loop with rapid switching or expression pedal sweeps.

This FilterPong variation loses the filter effects, and replaces it with shifts to the audible delay buffers.

  • Aux OFF – EXP PED HEEL  DELAY MIX  A0+B10
  • Aux OFF – EXP PED HEEL  FEEDBACK  95
  • Aux ON  – EXP PED TOE    DELAY MIX  A10+B10
  • Aux ON  – EXP PED TOE    FEEDBACK  0

An Aux switch or expression pedal layers DELAY A over DELAY B, and cuts the apparent length of the loop in half.  Pressing the REPEAT switch (bound to another Aux switch, or similar) recycles DELAY B only in an infinite loop (with dry on top).  Also half the apparent total length of the combined buffers.  This FILTERPONG preset has the potential for live manipulation of three distinct ‘loops’, with varying lengths and audible content.
