Ok, I was able to try it on a new Windows 10 laptop, connecting to any of the three USB ports on the laptop causes the connection sound to play, but it then pops up a window with “USB device not recognized. The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.”
And the Device Manager then doesn’t see it.
