Probably the biggest problem for me is that I have not found a clear explanation on how the hardware IO related to the software inserts, it’s very confusing.

Basically, any effects you want to appear on Insert 1 should be connected from H90 Out 3 > input of external effect > output of that effect > IN 3 of H90. For any effect you want to appear on Insert 2 you should connect H90 Out 4 > input of other external effect(s) > out of those effects > In 4 of H90.

I am just trying to find out if I can use an insert to connect an external effect while doing a simple wet dry and if so how to do that.

Since you’re using Insert 3 to send signal to your Bass amp via Out 3, then you can use the H90’s Insert 2 to position an external effect elsewhere in the chain. Use OUT 4 to your effect and back in through IN 4. In this case, you would connect your ES-5 using I/O 4. There is one exception, which I explain below.

The pedals that are connected to the ES-5 are distortion and fuzz style pedals.

It is not common to connect gain-based pedals in the WET portion of a W/D rig. If you were to do so in this setup, you would only feed the signal of the ES-5 to the guitar amp, nothing to the bass amp. It’s important to note that when you put Insert 1 and Insert 2 in the same position in the routing on the H90, the signal flows from Insert 1 to Insert 2. It cannot flow from Insert 2 to Insert 1. In other words, if you have the ES-5 connected to Insert 2 and you’re trying to position it before the Bass amp split, you may need to connect the Bass Amp to I/O 4 and the ES-5 to I/O3. Let me know if you need further clarification.
