H90 Mono Sum Routing Question

Forgive me if this has been answered already as I couldn’t find this specific use-case, I have a stereo loop I want to create using I/O 3/4 but I want to ensure the H90 will auto sum OR stereo depending on OUTPUT 1 or OUTPUT 1/2 being set up. Is this possible or will having the 4th I/O wired in always trigger stereo (if I don’t ‘force’ mono?)

Hello,

If you are using a stereo insert in the H90’s signal path, that insert will always be processed in stereo.

At the end of the signal path, your output will remain in stereo if outputs 1-2 are connected, or be summed to mono if only output 1 is connected (with the exception of the force mono parameter).

Can I get quick clarity, I basically want to have a loop from OUTPUT 3/4 –> stereo FX chain –> INPUT 3/4, guitar is input 1, and then have output 1 to an amp directly for MONO and then in the lucky chance to have a dual amp setup or interface occasionally use OUTPUT 1/2 to be stereo (without having to change the wiring for the FX inputs) – is that possible or is the fact that I am using 3 & 4 going to mean the output is always stereo regardless of OUTPUT 1/2 ?

And apologies if I am explaining this very poorly

Thanks for clarifying. Yes, that will work correctly if either output 1 or both outputs 1-2 are connected.

Just a little follow-up, I tried the wiring for this but I found that if I set up a stereo insert, the H90 treats the entire program as stereo even after forcing mono at the global level if only output 1 is sent to an amp.

Outputting to two amps correctly went in stereo but I could not get any program to automatically sum mono or force mono when only connected to one amp – is this expected behavior? Attached some pics of what I would expect to force to mono, initially automatically based on what I’ve read but then when I tried to force it

Sorry, but if the stereo insert is placed at the very end of the chain, then you cannot use Force Mono and it will always output in stereo.

If you place the stereo insert at any other point in the signal path, then your proposed setup will work for mono or stereo.

Sorry for the inconvenience, we may change this behavior in a future update but I can’t provide a timeline for that. I’d suggest you try a different setup for now.

Aha – got it, I was just digging up another old thread about this feature request. So basically current state – if you put your stereo insert in series anything before ‘post B’ and in parallel before ‘post A and B’ will auto sum to mono (or you can force sum). Would definitely love for this to be considered so cables can stay put and allow for more flexibility in a future update, granted maybe this is not the most common scenario.

Yes, this is certainly a bit of an edge case but we do have this feature request logged and hope to get it into a release at some point in the future.

If I can jump in with a related question: I’m new to routing and for the life of me I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.

I have a Tascam Model 16, which has one FX out and two Aux outs (all summed to mono afaik), as well as stereo control room outs and sub outs.  Currently I have the control room outs coming lined to inputs 1+2, going to outputs 1+2 routed to channels 11/12, which is how I was told was a good solution.  The other was to use the Aux outs in a similar fashion, only I’d get a summed mono mix converted to stereo, but I’d be able to split the effects in the mix using the per-channel Aux knobs.  However, neither seems to really work.  I’m definitely getting sound out of it, but I can barely hear it in my headphones, even at max output.  I feel like there’s some switch I need to be applying, but I have no idea at this point point.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

The only level controls on the H90 are for instrument or line level. You should have the H90 set to line level if connected directly to a mixing console.

You can connect the mono aux output to H90 input 1, and outputs 1-2 to the return channels, and that will give you a stereo signal.

You will need to individually adjust the aux send knob on the console for any track that you want to be sent to the H90.
