        So, I have a MOTU 10Pre audio interface, which has insert jacks in the form of send and return jacks for inputs 1 and 2. Inputs 1 and 2 on the 10pre are used by my Yamaha PSR530 keyboard. At the momenet, the send and return jacks are connected to the XLR input and outputs of nt H9000R, so that I can use the compressor algorithm. The idea is so I can keep the level of the drum sounds I am playing as level as possible no matter how much I play hard, soft, hit one or multiple keys at once.

         

        However, I also have an old rack synth, a EMU Proteus 2000. Since I have already used up the inserts on the 10pre, the Proteus 2000 actually has 4 sub outputs which act as a pair of inserts when connected to a pair of TRS Y splitter cables. This would be OK if I was just using the XLR’s on the H9000.

         

        But what if I want to use a pair of DB25 cables on the H9000, connecting channels 1 and 2 of the H9000 to/from the 10pre and channels 3 and 4 of the H9000 to/from the Proteus 2000, can I get away with connecting a splitter cable between the dsub cables and the Proteus 2000? Or, should I connect channels 3/4 of the dsub cables to the 10pre send and returns, and connect a y splitter cable between the H9000 XLR’s and the EMU Proteus 2000? Not forgetting, there are a total of 4 sub outs on the Proteus 2000 (that’s 4 mono inserts?), so I might get greedy trying to throw 2 stereo compressors (4 channels) at the Proteus 2000. Also, does it matter which compressor algorithms I use? Since all algorithms appear to be stereo, I am guessing I just need 3 compressor algos, 1 for the PSR530 drum sounds and 2 for the sun outs on the proteus which become inserts when the y splitters are connected. am I reading this correctly? I am guessing the wiring for either or both the XLR’s and DB25 options need to be configured in a certain way, such as which pins is hot, which is ground…

          Hello,

          Sorry, I’m not fully understanding what the setup you are proposing is. Why are you suggesting using a Y-splitter cable?

          The DSUB connections on the H9000 give you 8 mono channels, 1 channel per each of the 8 cables on the DSUB snake.

          When making a connection with the DSUB cable, you should use a single cable to connect to a mono device, or a pair of the cables to connect to a stereo device.

          The only time a splitter should be used is if your device has a TRS jack that supports a stereo signal or insert path.

            I have 3 options:

            1) make a y splitter cable with TRS jack to go to the SUB port of the Proteus 2000. The other mono ends would connect to XLR channel 1 in and out of the H9000. I would need to know which pins of the XLR in and out on the H9000 would need to be wired on the insert cable hot, cold, ground.

             

            2) buying 2x db25 to balanced jack snakes to connect analog channels 3+4 of the H9000 to these y-cables via a female to female coupler jack adapter

            3) I am already using analog XLR I/O 1+2 on the H9000 to connect to the send and returns 1+2 on the MOTU 10pre. I could always use the H9000 DB25 ports to send/return to the 10pre and the Proteus 2000.

             

            I am trying to find the best option using the DB25 ports of the H9000, as I understand the XLR ports are channels 1+2 and are duplicated on channels 1+2 of the DB25.

              Both the MOTU 10pre and the H9000 have ADAT I/O. Are you already using them? You could use ADAT for up to 8 channels of send/return (though ADAT on the H9000 only works at 44.1/48 kHz).

                I am trying to use the H9000 compressors as inserts rather than send/returns so none of the original signal is present so to speak. This is why I need to know the pin allocation on the analog XLR’s of the H9000.

                  found it. attached. what it does not tell me is whether or not the DB25 snakes will work when combined with an insert cable wired to the requirements of the EMU Protus 2000

                      The XLR and channels 1-2 of the DSUB are duplicates.

                      So whatever is fed to XLR 1-2 input/output will also be fed to DSUB 1-2 input/output.

                        …. makes me wish Eventide made an 8 jack in, 8 jack out expansion card for the H9000.

                          The EMU Proteus 2000 does in fact have sub outs which act as insert points as soon as the TRS end of the TRS to 2x mono cable is connected. I was going to connect the TRS end to the insert point of the EMU, whilst the send and return would be connected to the DSUBs of the H9000, one for send, one for return. See attached image of the send/return cable of the EMU Proteus 2000 and it’s sub out signal paths
