I have a nasty suspicion that this may be an example of a rare USB problem we have with a small number of XP systems, where the unit is only partially recognized. We are looking at this but are short of ideas at present (meaning no timescale available).
Given that your main priority is a one-time back up of presets before installing new software, you might want to consider finding a friend with a computer (pref not XP) and having them back up your presets for you.
