A “side chain” routing option would open up countless possibilities.

It occurred to me that if the stompboxes had a sidechain input, a lot of existing algorithms could be enhanced. Since many H9 and Factor pedal users never actually use one of their two inputs, and since past updates have shown us that new routing options are posible through software updates, I see no reason why an unused input couldn’t be used as a side chain in. So, I propose the following as an enhancement.

With a side chain, you could, for instance, assign any parameter in any effect to respond positively or negatively to the dynamics of the sidechain input. For example:

• Imagine a Leslie effect on your guitar that slows down automatically when you sing.
• Sidechain Gated Distortions for less noise, or for weirder posibilities, like synchronizing distortion blasts with a kick drum.
• Side chain Ducked Delays
• Side chain Ducked Reverbs

Or create some new effects:

• A dedicated side chain Noise Gate with effects loop, like the TC Electronics Sentry
• A VOCODER!!

Anyone else have ides for posibilities this idea might introduce?

Certainly a nice idea, and nicely presented, but with all the algorithm changes, quite a bit of work. We'll add it to the list.

Now that you say that, I can see how it’s not just a new routing option, but much more. I can only guess that it’s probably not the creation of a sidechain that would be the difficulty, but what the effect DOES with the sidechain once it has it. There are totally different things measured by a vocoder (reading formants) vs a compressor/limiter (reading dynamics), etc. But I appreciate your team considering my request. See if there’s any interest beside mine. I’d be surprised if there was not.

That said, I’ve noticed one thing since my initial post though. The routing I drew up of the “mono effect with sidechain passtrough” looks VERY similar to the Pre/Post routing method. As I understand it, Pre/Post uses either side A or side B for a mono effect, and the unused side is merely a passthrough of an uneffected signal. Maybe Pre/Post can be moidfied for sidechain uses as well. Just a thought.
