Just ordered H9 Max

Looking forward to playing it.  

 

How has Eventide been about adding new algorithms?  With the Max, do you get free algos for life?

 

I know you cannot sell the H9 and transfer algos.  That is ok.  I have tons of stompboxes and almost never sell anything.  When I do I always regret it!

“…do you get free algos for life?” As I understand it: as long as your Max lives. The free algos are bound to the Max and not to you (I think). A pity. May it live long! (As I hope my Max also does).

A question then is: if it dies, and you manage to – just before it dies – transfer all your algos to a newly bought Core, will that Core 1. can use these algos after the Max has died, and 2. can the Core get new algos for free? My guess is 1. yes and 2. no.

Ehhhh…but the algos are in H9 Control so after the Max dies you can transfer them tot a new Core….hmm…I don’t think I completely understand the policy.

My guess is: if the Max stays alive for lets say 10 or 15 years (I have no idea what its life expectancy is) and then it dies, then you can buy a Core and load all the algos from H9 Control into that Core, but you will not get new algos for free. But this is a guess. Or are there only presets in H9 Control, and no algos? I am a bit confused. My clarifications raise more questions 🙂

If an H9 Max is registered to your Eventide account, then from Eventide's perspective you have Max whether or not it's broken.  So, you'll continue to get new algorithms for other H9s registered to the same account even if the Max isn't connected to H9 Control.

But in the Support section in the FAQ (under H9 Max) I read the following:

“Q: If I buy/sell a used H9 Max, will it stay an H9 Max?
A: Yes. The H9 Max status and algorithms are tied to the pedal, not to the account. This is different than a standard or H9 Core unit where the algorithms are tied to your account and stay with you rather than the device. “

This Q & A confuses me a bit (considering what you write).

I try to connect your statement and the Q&A.

So if my Max is registered to my account, and I buy a Core (and register it to my account), I can use in this Core:
1. all the algorithms the Max has;
2. all future algorithms for free;
3. but if I unregister my Max, I can’t use all the algorithms anymore in my Core;
4. and I can’t use new algorithms for free in my Core.

Am I right in thinking:
My account is Max as long as my Max is registered??

So if I sell my Max (which I won’t do) I am still Max as long as I don’t unregister it? This feels like a contradiction to the Q&A I just qouted.

It is a bit confusing for me.

I'm going to rewrite that FAQ.  What it says isn't strictly speaking correct.  I think it was written with the MaxOut program in mind, and what they're trying to say is that if you turn an H9 into a Max through the MaxOut program when you sell it, it's an H9 Max just like one you buy in a store.  But the wording is misleading.

Well, yes, I suppose you could say that your account is Max as long as a Max is registered.  And it's true that if you sell your Max, you are still Max as long as you don't unregister it (although the new user will likely contact support and have us deregister it which will cause you to lose the Max algorithms).

The reason things work like this was we asked ourselves if we wanted to require a user to have their H9 Max and their other H9s connected to H9 Control to get a new algorithm.  Some people have four or five H9s, and it seemed unreasonable to expect them to connect their Max and the other H9s simultaneously to prove they have a Max.  So, instead, when you use the 'Restore Purchases' function for example, it checks if you have a Max registered to your Eventide account, but it doesn't require you to have that Max actually connected to prove that you have a Max.

@gkellum – Thanks very much for explaining! I am happy that my “Max rights” aren’t lost when my Max pedal itself is broken!

Before this posting I thought the Max rights were strictly pedal bound; and if the Max pedal dies, my Max rights die – I thought. Which didn’t feel very good.

But now I know: If the Max pedal dies, I still have Max rights when I buy a Core (when I keep the broken Max pedal in my possesion, which legitimizes me to keep it registered). Nice!

This policy is much more fair than I thought it was.
