Hello – I’d appreciate some help with the following. I’m unable to get the H90 to pass along incoming MIDI Clock thru to the next device in my chain. Here is my setup:
– clock source is a Quad Cortex, connected via DIN (Quad Cortex OUT to H90 IN)
– H90 Settings (see screen shot):
> Tempo Source: MIDI Clock
> MIDI Output Mode: Thru
> MIDI Clock Source: DIN
– the H90 tempo syncs just fine to the Quad Cortex clock
– H90 Out/Thru is connected to the next pedal (a Strymon BRIG)
– The Strymon pedal does NOT sync to the clock
But…if I take the same cable going from the H90 to the Strymon, and instead connect it from Quad Cortex OUT to Strymon IN (bypassing the H90 completely), the Strymon clock syncs just fine to the Quad Cortex
So I’m concluding the Strymon can accept incoming clock, and the cable I’m using has no issues, so therefore the H90 is not sending the clock out.
How can I resolve this?
Thank you :->

Hello sharshbarger,
This may be a case of an incompatible MIDI cable. Are you using the Strymon MIDI EXP cable by chance? In my setup at home, I confirmed there aren’t any issues sending MIDI out of the H90 5-pin DIN to another regular pedal, and then I tried going from H90 5-pin to TRS to an Eventide UltraTap without any issues. Of course, the UltraTap had to be set to receive on the MIDI TRS on the EXP input. The cable I use for my builds is this one from Disaster Area: https://www.disasterareadesigns.com/shop/p/5p-trs-pro-midi-cableThese have Pins 2, 4, 5 wired through and are compatible with MIDI.org TRS type-A.
Some time ago I researched this and came upon a thread in a gear forum that said:
“I emailed Strymon support about the Strymon MIDI Cable and asked them about the cable trying to find out if they adopted the MIDI DIN5 to TRS A OR B standard which basically flips the pins 2&3’s polarity on the TRS Tip and Sleeve respectively. What I got back was neither! Strymon uses a proprietary cable.”

Hello and thank you for the quick reply. I wasn’t using the Strymon cable, but own one and just tried it. That DOES work (but of course doesn’t fit my board because it lacks right angles where I need them!)
It’s just so odd that the Quad Cortex can get clock to the Strymon pedal using the same (non-Strymon) cable that the H90 can’t, but obviously the solution is a cable, and the H90 is doing what it is. supposed to do.
Thanks again! I love my H90, and the support here is fantastic.

On the Strymon website, they offer a right-angle MIDI to right-angle TRS option of their MIDI TRS cable. Might just have to bite the bullet and invest in one.
Thank you for reporting back. Helps everyone here learn!
