Why does selecting MIDI THRU disable all MIDI Transmit functions in the Factor stompboxes?

It would be so much more useful in a Midi setup for the Factor pedals to have a Midi merge function to merge incoming Midi data with the stompbox's own Midi transmit data to the Midi output.

If the Midi output is set to XMT in the stompbox, then all Midi thru data does not go through the stompbox, which means that other pieces of Midi controlled gear placed after the stombox cannot be controlled.

Why was it designed this way?

MIDI Thru simply connects the MIDI in to the MIDI out – this is a pretty standard implementation.

It would, as you mention, be nice if the MIDI THRU function could be combined with a MIDI Merge function, but this is not possible at the present time.

MIDI Merge boxes are available at low cost, which will allow you to do what you want.
