Strictly speaking, to preserve all the information, you will need to change the battery with the unit powered up. For obvious reasons, this is NOT RECOMMENDED for anyone but a qualified technician. Either way, it would be at your own risk.
Probably better to save the setup and user presets to a card (see UM), power the unit down, and reload. Mistakes would be unfortunate.
