I repeat. Have you made sure that all pins (1,2 and 3) of the XLR are connected to something ?
The fact that you get the problem with nothing connected suggests this may be the issue.I believe that this is the most likely explanation.
If it is not this, or you do not wish to consider it, you will have to send the unit in for service.
