      Guys,

I ave serious problems with my H-8000FW in Vista/Cubase. It just doesn't work. I have set Cubase to receive external syncrnozation from the H-8000FW (through Firewire) and it I can't hear any audio coming from Cubase although I can see the level meters moving. It also looses the sync: sometimes on Cubase it says: Sync: Idle and at other times it says Sync: sync. So I have checked the back of the unit and I see two LEDs – the bottom LED goes off as soon as Cubase looses the sync. When it's synced the LED is on and in both occasions I hear no audio. Also, when it says Sync: Idle (in Cubase) and I press play it plays for a couple of seconds and then it stops. I have also noticed in the Dice app that the Receiver status changes from Locked to Unlocked when Cubase looses the sync.

I have also tried to increase the buffer size (from 256 to 512) and no luck. I have also tried to disable WDM and still no luck.

I did another test and connected the ADAT out of the H-8000 FW to my RME Fireface 800, I have chosen an apropriate routing for my setup (Analog A-B) and in the Fireface mixer I see audio activity in both Analog outs as well as ADAT outs. However, in the Analog A-B routing the Firewire gets its input directly from the Main outs (like the ADAT does) which leads me to think that there is no audio *returning" from Cubase through Firewire.

Also, notice that the levels of recording are TOO low Only one LED is lit on the H-8000 FW – compare this to what the Fireface mixer shows…

I have also sent an email to the Cubase forum and I have attached some pics for you to check out… Pics are here:

This is getting really frustrating 🙁

       Hi Yannis

Sounds like you have a real problem that we would like to fix.

Please email support@eventide.com and reference this forum thread and we will be able to help you. It would be good if you include full details of your routing and connection setu, as well as which firewire card you are using, and whether you can play audio from the PC to the H8000FW using the Windows Control Panel, as described in the manual.

A note to everyone – if you have a problem that is probably specific to your unit or application, you will get a more effective response from our Customer Support department than on the Forum, which is really better at more general topics.

      Hi Nick,

thanks a lot for the suggestions – you are really helpful. Anyway, I *think* I have sorted out this thing. I have downloaded a latency checker from http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml and I have loaded 4 VSTs in Cubase and 9 FX along with pre-recorded audio. So I had a two bar loop in Cubase and while this was playing I was looking at the latency checker which showed normal activity followed by significant red spikes. The latency checker suggested that I started uninstalling problematic drivers from the Device Manager so I literally left my laptop naked and still had the same problems. I was about to give up when I had the idea of disabling the AERO environment from Vista and it worked!! I only had 1 red spike in the VST performance which was also recorded in the latency checker.

Exact same things with the RME Fireface 800 driver – it just doesn't like the AERO. So, I was wondering if the guys at Eventide who wrote the drivers, checked their performance with AERO enabled? It makes a very significant difference. I searched a little deeper (I am a computer programmer) and I have found that Vista allocates a very small Process ID (PID) to some drivers, for the RME drivers the Process ID was 2 (let me just say that a PID of 4 means that the driver is actually IDLE!!!!!) so it takes a little time to wake up the driver, give it a higher PID (a lot of times it gives the value of 15) which… surprise surprise… coincided with AERO (so that could be a potential conflict) and then returns the PID.

Like I said, I left Cubase playing for more than 1 hour with the VST performance at 35%-40% and I had only one red spike. Also I had to change the Routing from Analog A-B to Firewire A-B (silly me… that was the reason I couldn't get any audio in the first place). My bad, but I had 6000 things in mind and I forgot the most basic…

So, I will test this setup some more and report back… Nick, I have to thank you for your help again. You guys rock!

      Regards,
      Yannis

Umm… a slightly irrelevant question: all my posts appear without paragraphs and proper layout. I have tried to change some options here, but none seem to work. What do you guys use?

       Hi Yannis

Glad to hear you are getting somewhere.

We don't have much experience of Vista (most of our people use Macs, and the rest tend to shun Vista). The problem may be related to deferred procedure calls which can cause I/O operations to get delayed. Check out the DPC monitor on the Dice Control Panel, leave it running for a while, and see if it suggests a change in operation mode when in Aero or N-aero.

Regarding the formatting, I always like to have short paragraphs for email etc, as I find people don't read long ones. So, I make great use of the RETURN key.

       Hi Yannis

make your life easier and nicer!

Get a Macintosh…. or use XP.

The H8000FW runs smoothly on a Mac Mini!

      Gift

      sincerely

Italo, Nick thanks again for your suggestions.

Installing XP was the first thing that I tried when I got my laptop. It's a Sony Vaio VGN-AW21Z/B (the one that appears in the Casino Royale movie, haha..!) but unfortunately Sony doesn't give any downgrades to XP. So, for the past 30 days I have been doing nothing else other than installing drivers and running setups and searching things in the Internet.

The major problem was that I couldn't find any drivers for my graphics card… 🙁 So, it had to be Vista… So, another option was to sell the RMEs and get a Prism Sound Orpheus which supposedly works in Vista but users have reported full blast volumes and unusual behavior. Prism says these have been fixed but who knows…?

The Mac was a definite alternative, but the new ones have a problematic firewire chip from Agere (whereas previous ones were from Texas Instruments, I think) – the Sony's FW chipset is from Ricoh and it works pretty well.

Nick, in the Dice application for latency, it's either left blank or it returns an error message… :-/

      Regards,
      Yannis

Excellent! You can save more money by getting a previous generation Mac, without this Nvidia madness.

      cheers

Are you clicking on "Quick Reply" at the bottom of the post, or on the "Reply" button at the top of the message? It seems the Quick Reply is very buggy – I grabbed the pop up window and moved it so I could see the message behind it, and all of the window controls went blank! It also seems that Quick Reply loses formatting, so you'll have to add "<p>" at the beginnings and "</p>" at the ends of each paragraph. Working with the "Reply" button doesn't seem to have the same problems…

EDIT: Hmm, it seems that "Reply" didn't really get the formatting correct either. I guess I'll just start adding the "<p>" and "</p>" to make sure…

      Test 01

      Test 02

Thanks Doug, it works with the p and /p, although it's awkward..
