      Without a USB port, how does anybody connect it to a computer for updates, backups, and editing?

      Serial (RS232). For updates, people usually use a CF card (it's faster).

      Thanks, but I haven't owned a computer with a serial port for about 7 years now. Any way to make a usb work?

      USB to serial adaptors are widely and cheaply available.
