Past: Owned the unit for about 5 years, always just tweaked presets, never really programmed. I had a checksum error in the past, did what the manual suggested (the “Fix” command), all fine.
Current: Was playing around and actually getting around to learning some programming! Saving patches in locations 1-7 and 10-12. Unit froze on patch 10. Turned off, held “Program” during the restart. Did this several times, finally worked again for about 10 seconds. Did the Program thing again, similar result. Decided to hold the “Setup” button during restart. Worked 10 seconds, froze again (always on patch 10, which did not actually get deleted). Did the Setup thing a few times, always worked just for seconds, then died. At one point, death meant gibberish on the screen, but usually it just freezes and buttons don’t do anything. Then, worked for about 3 minutes, then froze.
Any ideas?

Try re-initializing, as described in UM.
If that fails, next thing would be a new internal battery.

Did both of those things – held the 8 button while turning on the unit, replaced the battery.
Seemed fine for about 5 minutes, did some programming, then it froze again. Restarted, still frozen.

I suppose I should try “replacing” the operating system software…can you point me to directions?

Alas, it sounds like a memory or other hardware fault. Since the software is held n flash rom it rarely needs replacing.
But, you may want to try, so look at the Web Site support pages.

The website talks about using a serial cable or compact flash to transfer data, neither of which I have. The battery took me plenty of time to secure locally, so I would rather not go with the software update if it seems unlikely to work, given it will take me some time to secure the cable or the compact flash mechanism.
Instead, is there a local service shop in Minneapolis that deals with Eventide equipment?

I'm sorry you are having trouble.
Batteries, compact flash and serial cables are widely available though Amazon or similar outlets.
Because ours are low volume specialist products we do not have a nationwide service network.
I would suggest that you check the various support options on this Web Site, and if necessary contact support@eventide.com.
