      Hi all,

purchased the Madi Extension board some month ago and upgraded my RME Madi to a MADI FX. I am currently trying to figure out how to setup the routing properly.

Basically I have two Antelope Orions with 2×32 channels which are fed by the Madi FX and output to my analog console. To integrate the H9o00 I setup individual external FX groups and use MADI for send and returns. Thanks to the extension board there are 32 I/O to do so and that is really fantastic.

Nevertheless, compared to my previous setup (HDSPe) the MADI FX has 2 optical I/Os and one coaxial. Previously, I have been daisy chaining my two Orions over the one optical line the HDSPe had. With the MADI FX I could now address each of the units via a separate optical line and use the coaxial one to connect the H9000. While that pretty much sounds straight forward there is one issue that I don’t seem to find a solution for: How can I make sure that the H900o will not reserve MADI channels 1-32? For instance I would like to offset the channels by a certain number to make sure I can reserve 1-48 i.e. for my Orions, then 49 would be H9000 Madi Channel 1? In a sense I would like to have a chance to move the H9000 MADI channels in the MADI stream as a group to a desired range.

Maybe I am too stupid and can be done using the RME Total Mix – whatever, any help is appreciated.

      Cheers

I’m using H9000 with the Fireface UFX+. UFX+ allows me to split the 64 madi channels available, so I have 32channels via MADI coaxial, and 32 via MADI optical. However, it’s not possible to choose which comes in first in Totalmix FX, optical or coaxial (it’s optical first, then coax).  Also, the MADI expansion of the H9000 only supports 32 channels, and I don’t think it’s possible to reassign those 32 channels to channels 33-64 within the MADI i/o of the H9000.

I don’t have the HDSPe MADI FX, but I believe that same is true there. You can’t reassign / move the MADI channels around within different physical MADI inputs. (only within the same MADI input /stream, and only when daisy-chaining devices that support assigning to specific channels within the MADI stream)

I remember there was a feature request for reassigning and moving all the channels around freely in TMFX, but this idea was discarded by RME, as it would make things too confusing to manage.. (I believe this would be true for most users)

But at least you can always hide the channels you don’t need in TMFX.

Sorry, on the H9000 side of things there is no way to reassign which numbers the MADI channels will use, they will always be 1-32. You’ll have to take care of the routing using software or a DAW, or using a hardware MADI router.
