I'm looking at a new interface, the Saffire 56. It comes with S/Pdif.

The copy said that that it could do AES on XLR with a patch cable, but I wrote them and they said they are going to implement that but it isn't working yet.

Is such a thing possible? The XLR would only need two wires connected?

The interface looks nice and I'd like the AES as I understand it is the only way to get digital I/O above 48k on my Eclipse.

      any info appreciated, Thanks

In many (but not all) cases you can connect an AES source to an S/PDIF input by just using pins 2 and 3 of the cable (no shield). It does not matter which way round they are connected.

The Eclipse will reliably produce S/PDIF out at 96K. We do not recommend S/PDIF inputs at this rate as they may be unreliable, due to ground noise, low signal level, etc.
